Why Use a Silicone Pipe?

Silicone Pipes

Silicone is one of the newest smoker-friendly pipes to hit in the market lately.

Silicone pipes are an excellent choice for people who are prone to accidents or those who have a long history of broken pieces. If for the last year you have used many pieces of glass pipes, you might want to consider switching to silicone pipes.

Before we can look at the reasons why silicone is a good choice, it is essential to understand what it is. What are the materials that make silicone, and what process is used in its manufacture?

Silicone and the process of manufacture

Silicone is a synthetic polymer material which is a hybrid between plastic and rubber.

Essentially, silicone starts as sand. The sand is then mixed with quartz to form silica.  This silica is then blended with carbon and heated at extreme temperatures forming silicon.  Silicon is then reacted with fossil fuels and purified.  The level of purification will determine the quality of resins.

The end product is a stable polymer which is highly resistant to chemicals and heat.

Depending on the manufacturer, silicone is safe.  Most products in the market today are made with high-grade, FDA-approved silicone which is free of BPA’s. It is also non-toxic. Silicone has no known reaction to beverages or food. Additionally, it doesn’t produce any harmful fumes.

When using silicone pipes, it is advisable to use it with a glass or titanium bowl, tip or banger. Although it designed to withstand high temperatures of up to 600⁰F, you should never apply a torch or flame directly to the silicone.

Although glass has been the preferred material to make pipes for the longest time now, silicone offers several benefits which glass cannot offer.  Here are some benefits of silicone

  • Flexibility

Silicone is flexible meaning that you can stack it anywhere comfortably without having to worry.  It can also bend to fit into any odd-shaped spaces.

  • Durability

The silicone is also a durable material meaning that you do not have to worry about them cracking; breaking or shattering like is the case with glass.

  • Easy to clean

Anything is easy to clean as long as you know what you are doing, and silicone is no different.  And not only is it easy to clean but also you don’t have to run the risk of accidental breakage.

  • Affordable

Silicone pipes and bongs are mass produced and this has resulted in low prices as compared to custom glass pipes.

  • Suitable for storing oils and waxes

If you are dabbing a concentrate, you know how important it is not to waste any of it. You also know how messy it can be. Thankfully, silicone is nonstick and is an ideal vessel to store your concentrates. It does not matter how sticky your concentrate is, it will never stick to the silicone pipe. This makes it easy to scoop it out with a dab tool. It also ensures that there is no wastage
